Dear Residential Services,
On the 25th October we of number 13-18 Marley Hall received fines of £30 each for leaving our kitchen door open overnight. We are absolutely disgusted that the University would go to such measures as to see those of who pay extremely expensive rent costs to be asked to pay up even more money. To us this is no more than a money making scheme for the University. Below is a list of things that we have found unacceptable over the short period of time here, and feel as the University found it so easy to find faults in our Halls resulting in fines, why could they not have corrected these other problems so quickly.

Our cooker was broken for over three weeks from the very start of the term meaning we had to find other methods of feeding ourselves. This proved costly to us as we had to eat off campus and as of yet we have received no offer of apology or compensation from the University for the inconvenience they have caused us.

Our bathroom in B018 has encountered problem after problem. Firstly it took the University four weeks to get some sort of shower curtain in place. Secondly the actual curtain in the bathroom has been down since the day I arrived. No attempt has been by any member staff to fix the problem and the problem still remains. The third problem in this bathroom is that the toilet leaks slightly after every flush. This slight leak means the bathroom by the end of the day is very wet and is not dry until the cleaner comes in the next day. Because there is no cleaner at the weekends, by the end of the weekend the bathroom is basically flooded. This is just not acceptable.

Our toilet in T018 also leaks. This slight leak means the toilet by the end of the day is very wet and is not dry until the cleaner comes in the next day. Because there is no cleaner at the weekends, by the end of the weekend the toilet is basically flooded.

Our shower in S018 has never been fixed. The water from the shower basically dribbles out. It’s not possible to have a proper shower using this facility. Again this is not acceptable as we pay extremely high rent.

The level of rent paid should reflect the level of service we are provided with. We believe that in our situation this is not true and know from speaking to other students in other Halls that they hold the same opinions as us. The University’s “Eagle Eyes” which spotted an open kitchen door seemed to have turned a blind eye to any problem that would cost them money. We feel that immediate action needs taken to the above problems and feel that the University has not provided the service promised. We cannot accept this fine or warning because not one of us was ever told of this reported incident in person. The University should put all what is not correct in place as soon as possible. We await a response from the University and believe we are being treated unfairly and unjustly.

Signed by all hall occupants

Suffice to say, we got all of the problems fixed in the afternoon and they withdrew the fine...ahahhahaa!!!!!!!!!!
